
Professor Akanni Akinyemi, a distinguished Professor of Demography and Social Statistics, currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Development at Obafemi Awolowo University. His extensive research in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) is highly influential. He meticulously examines factors driving family planning uptake and advocates for its critical role in mitigating high-risk births across sub-Saharan Africa. Professor Akinyemi’s work also provides crucial insights into the barriers to abortion and the provision of comprehensive post-abortion care, aiming to improve service access and integration. He has led numerous research and capacity-strengthening initiatives throughout Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa. His leadership in the field is further underscored by his membership on the Union for African Population Studies (UAPS) and International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) councils, and his former role as Chair of the SRHR panel for UAPS.
He is a recipient of many distinguished awards including the Bixby international Leadership award.
